Is the economy of today a setback or an advantage to start your own business?
Over the last couple of years a lot of people have lost their jobs and this has led many of them to consider starting their own business. Even people who have jobs are considering it because they know that they have little real job security. That being said most people who are considering starting a business are waiting for the economy to improve before they start. This may not be the best plan.
Most people would tell you that it is not a good idea to start a business in the current economy and there are certainly things that would make it difficult to do so. The biggest challenge that you are going to face right now is that it will be very difficult to get funding for your business. Banks are not interested in lending money to new businesses and investors are really cutting back on the money that they put into them. The other challenge that you are going to face is that there will likely be fewer people buying what you are selling than there would be during a stronger economy.
While there are legitimate reasons that you may not want to start a business right now there are many successful companies have been started during a recession. In fact there are several advantages to starting a business when the economy is weak. One of those advantage is that it will mean that your competitors are weaker. In all likelihood they will have suffered quite badly during the weak economic periods. For the most part larger companies will be hurt more by a poor economy than smaller ones simply because they need more sales to remain profitable. This means that it will probably be easier for you to take customers away from them than would have been possible in a stronger economy.
Another reason that you may find that it is better to start a business in a weak economy is that your start up costs are probably going to be lower. With fewer businesses being started the companies that sell the equipment that you need to start your business will likely be struggling. This usually means that they will lower their prices. Being able to start your business for less money out of your pocket will put your business in a much stronger position.
Starting your business now will also mean that you have a head start when the economy does improve. Most people will wait until the economy starts to improve before they decide to start their company. Doing this means that they will miss out on the early days of the recovery. If you can establish yourself in your niche early it will be difficult for these other companies to displace you.
