Do you need a lot of cash to start your own business?
One of the most common reasons that people give for not going into business for themselves is that they don't have enough money. This is not really a good reason however as you can start a business with very little money if you need to. Obviously it would be easier if you had a lot of money but there is no reason that you can't do it with a very small amount.
How much money you need in order to be able to start a business is going to depend in large part on what kind of business you are looking to start. Obviously some businesses require a great deal of equipment to get started and this is going to cost a lot of money. There are however other businesses that require very little to get them started. In most cases these will be service businesses which may require only things that you already have anyway like a computer and a phone.
If money is tight you are obviously going to want to start with one of the businesses that has low start up costs. If you go to the library you will find all kinds of books on how to start these businesses which should give you a good idea of which ones you can start without a lot of money. One thing to keep in mind though is that if you are starting with little money you are going to have to put in a lot more work to get the business up and running.
The biggest challenge that all businesses face is finding customers and this is where having money will come in handy. The more you have to spend on marketing the more likely it is that you will attract customers. Certainly there are ways that you can get customers without having to spend money but if you want to grow you will have to invest in marketing. The best approach if you are starting on a shoestring is to get a few customers using free methods and then once the money starts coming in you can invest in marketing.
One other thing to keep in mind when you are starting a business is that it can take several months before the money starts coming in. That means that you are going to have to have a way to support yourself during that time. The best way to do this is to have cash in the bank that you can live on. However in some cases it may be possible to start your business while still holding on to a job. Obviously this limit the amount of time that you have to dedicate to your business which will slow down how fast you can grow. However if money is tight you may not have any other option.
